What is the New Horizons for Seniors Program?
For those unfamiliar, the NHSP is a federal grants and contributions program designed to support projects that make a difference in the lives of seniors. The goal is simple: strengthen social inclusion so seniors can stay active, engaged, and connected to their communities .
Since the program launched in 2004, Canada has invested over $1 billion , funding more than 45,000 projects across the country .
The 2026-27 Changes: What’s New?
This year is different. The government has introduced several important changes to make the program more impactful. Here are the highlights:
1. More Money ($50,000!)**
The maximum grant amount has officially **doubled** . Organizations can now apply for up to **$50,000 per project. This is a significant increase from the previous cap of $25,000 .
Note: If your project involves construction or renovations (capital assistance), you can use up to $25,000 of that total for those specific expenses.
2. New “Seniors-First” Criterion
The government is prioritizing organizations that put seniors at the heart of their operations. There is now a specific assessment criterion to encourage applications from groups whose primary mandate or mission is to serve seniors .
3. You Must Have a CRA Business Number
To streamline the process, all applicants must have a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) business number .
4. The GCOS Portal is Mandatory
Paper applications are mostly out. Submissions must be made through the Grants and Contributions Online Services (GCOS) portal. This allows you to track your application status online. (If you truly cannot use the portal, you can request an exception) .
Is Your Project Eligible?
To qualify for the community-based stream, your project must tick a few boxes. It must:
- Be no longer than 52 weeks (one year).
- Involve seniors at the core: Seniors must lead, plan, or play a vital role in the project. This isn’t just a program for them; it must be with them .
- Meet at least one of the five program objectives:
- Promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations.
- Engaging seniors in the community through mentoring others.
- Expanding awareness of elder abuse (including financial abuse).
- Supporting social participation and inclusion (combatting isolation).
- Providing capital assistance (renovations/equipment).
Heads up for Capital Projects: If you are applying for funds to fix a roof or buy a fridge (Objective 5), your project must also meet a second objective from the list above .
The “Bonus Points” (National Priorities)
While you don’t have to pick a national priority to apply, aligning your project with one of these will make your application much stronger. The 2026 priorities focus on :
- Supporting Healthy Aging: Think digital literacy workshops for isolated seniors or mental health supports.
- Preventing Senior Abuse: Creating materials to stop financial scams and fraud.
- Celebrating Diversity & Inclusion: Intergenerational programs, Indigenous reconciliation projects, or serving vulnerable 2SLGBTQI+ seniors.
- Supporting Financial Security: Helping seniors navigate complex government benefits or tax filing.
Who Can Apply?
You are eligible if you are a :
- Non-profit organization
- Municipal government
- Indigenous organization (Band council, tribal council)
- Research or educational institution (like a university or school board)
- Public health authority
For-profit organizations are not eligible.
