Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship

The Research Training Program (RTP) is funded by the Australian Government and provides support for domestic and international students undertaking Higher Degrees by Research (HDR). It covers tuition fees and provides a living stipend and allowances .

Deakin University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (DUPR)

The Deakin University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (DUPR) is funded directly by Deakin University. It offers similar benefits to the RTP and is awarded to outstanding research candidates who meet the University’s high academic standards .

Additional Benefits

  • Part-time Options: Available for domestic students with carer responsibilities or medical conditions (minimum 60% FTE)ย

For part-time award holders approved for carer or medical circumstances, the maximum award period is 6 years for a Doctoral student and 4 years for a Masters by Research student

Selection process

RTP and DUPRS Stipends will be awarded to candidates as the result of a competitive process outlined in the ranking guidelines below. Candidates receiving an RTP or DUPRS Stipend will be enrolled as on-campus full-time students.

Applicants for an RTP or DUPRS Stipend must have:

  • completed at least four years of tertiary education studies
  • achieved 80% or equivalent in the research component of their previous study or an equivalent level of academic attainment, taking into account previous study, relevant work experience, research publications and other research experience
  • met all other minimum entry requirements according to the Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) Admission, Selection and Enrolment Procedure.ย 

Currently enrolled graduate research candidates can apply for an RTP or DUPRS Stipend and will be assessed by the Faculty/Institute. Currently enrolled graduate researchers may not apply after they have completed more than three years of their doctoral course or two years of their masters course (or part-time equivalent).

Step 1: Identify a Potential Supervisor

Before applying, you must identify an academic at Deakin University whose research aligns with your proposed project . Contact potential supervisors in your faculty or research institute via Deakin’s contact pages.

Step 2: Obtain Supervisor Support

Your proposed supervisor must provide a Supervisor Support Statement confirming their agreement to host your fellowship/study. This form can be downloaded from the online application system, completed by the supervisor, and attached to your application .

Step 3: Prepare Your Research Proposal

Ensure your research proposal is written for an interdisciplinary audience, as assessors will come from a range of research disciplines. The proposal should clearly articulate your research aims, methods, and significance .
